Biography

In 1850 Henry Quackenbush is listed as being five years old. Henry is shown living in the household of Isaac Quackenbush and Maryann Quackenbush.[1]

Inventor of The Nutcracker

"One of Quackenbush's most famous and most successful inventions came in 1878, when he created the first nutcracker and nutpick. In 1913, he patented the spring-jointed nutcracker, a nickel-plated, solid steel nutcracker with four picks. Nearly 200 million of these nutcrackers have been sold worldwide since then." [2]

Inventor of the Air Gun

"Henry Marcus Quackenbush (1847-1933) served an apprenticeship at the Remington Arms Company as a young man. At the age of 16 he invented the extension ladder (patent date October 22, 1867) and began manufacturing it.
"His first gun patent, issued June 6, 1871, was for the "Eureka" air pistol. He produced his first air rifle in 1876. The rifle's spring/air design and its dedicated steam powered manufacturing plant were revolutionary. Many historians credit Quackenbush as the 'father of the mass produced air gun'.
"John Groenewold is the author of Quackenbush Guns, the definitive work on the air rifles and firearms made by the H.M. Quackenbush Company beginning in the late 19th century. Mr. Groenewold offers parts and service for these and other air guns." [3]

Death

Death: Sep. 8, 1933
Industrialist. He is best known as the inventor of the extension ladder (1867), the nickel plated, solid steel nutpick and spring-jointed nutcracker (1913). 160 million nutcrackers have been produced since. He founded the H. M. Quackenbush Company in 1871 after quitting his job as a gun maker at Remington Arms in nearby Ilion, New York, to start his own metal working and gun shop. Considered today to be a highly ingenious inventor, engineer and businessman, in order to produce many of his products he also had to invent and make the machines needed to produce those products (he invented a machine to standardize shot size. This allowed his guns, when used with his shot, to function flawlessly. His shot also functioned in most other air guns of the same caliber without malfunctioning). Today, H. M. Quackenbush Inc. and its parent, HMQ Metal Finishing Group LLC, are two of the largest metal finishing and electroplating companies in the Northeast. (bio by: Ron Buchinski)
