Tom and his brother would often join their father during work learning the tricks of the trade. The family-owned a colonial house in Lexington which was built in 1787. Growing tensions between the USA and Russia during the cold war instilled a fear of a nuclear war in many people. As a result, many business houses were established which offered to built fallout shelters.

Seeing this, Tom’s father built a shelter under his house to minimize the effect of a nuclear attack. Even though the shelter never came to use, it proved to be a valuable learning experience for Tom and his brother.

The early experience proved to be invaluable for Tom and his brother who established their own company by the name of Silva Brother’s Construction. Early on in its establishment, the company gathered a lot of attention for its consistency and craftsmanship.
